What it's about
What is the School Plan 4.0?
The MIM (Ministry of Education and Merit) has allocated 2.1 billion of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) to the "School 4.0" Plan, aimed at encouraging the digital transition of Italian schools through two different actions:
  • Action 1 – Transformation of classrooms into innovative learning environments
  • Action 2 – Creation of laboratories for the digital professions of the future
Classes are transformed into innovative learning environments thanks to School 4.0

With decree of the Minister of Education n. 161 of 14 June 2022, the School Plan 4.0 was adopted. The Plan is envisaged by the PNRR as a synthesis and accompaniment tool for the implementation of the relevant investment lines and intends to provide support for the actions that will be carried out by the educational institutions in compliance with their teaching, management and organizational autonomy.
The School Plan 4.0 includes two "frameworks" which present the reference framework and the main guidelines for the design of innovative learning environments (Next Generation Classrooms) and laboratories for the digital professions of the future (Next Generation Labs).

For the “Next Generation Classrooms” framework:
It is the first action of the "School 4.0" plan, which involves the transformation of at least 100,000 classrooms into innovative learning environments. The first and second cycle schools will design and create physical and digital learning environments, characterized by innovation of spaces, furnishings and equipment and by a core group of innovative pedagogies for their most effective use. The physical and virtual transformation must be accompanied by changes in learning and teaching methodologies and techniques.

For the “Next Generation Labs” framework:
It is the second action of the "School 4.0" Plan, it has the aim of creating laboratories for the digital professions of the future in secondary schools, providing them with spaces and advanced digital equipment for learning skills based on the study present in the school in technological fields.

NEXT GENERATIONS CLASSROOMS is the first action of the “School 4.0” Plan and aims to transform at least 100 thousand classrooms into innovative learning environments (1.296 billion investment).

It is aimed at all primary, lower and upper secondary schools.

The objective is to equip the environments with flexible and modular furnishings and versatile technologies, promoting the inter-connectivity of classrooms, inclusiveness, communication with common, outdoor and recreational spaces.

  • Integration between physical classroom and virtual environment/platform, to encourage new dimensions of hybrid learning
  • Access to the digital catalogue, collection of basic digital resources, software and disciplinary or interdisciplinary contents also available on the cloud
Next Generation Labs

NEXT GENERATIONS LABS is the second action of the “School 4.0” Plan to create laboratories for the digital professions of the future (424 million investment).

It is aimed at secondary schools

The laboratories must focus on: digital communication, cybersecurity, robotics, artificial intelligence, etc.
They must also be understood as large open spaces divided into communicating and integrated areas or spaces where students can express themselves individually and develop group projects.
